چکیده

Phase discrimination was measured in a ‘‘go/no-go’’ behavioral task for chinchillas and human listeners in order to compare spectral resolvability between the two groups. Tone complexes comprised a 250-Hz fundamental frequency with N consecutive higher harmonics, and subjects discriminated the cosine-phase complex from a random-phase complex. Values of d8 increased as N increased and were similar between chinchillas and human listeners. Values of the criterion for each N condition were also similar between chinchillas and humans. The results suggest that spectral resolvability is likely to be similar for the two groups. © 2005 Acoustical Society of America PACS numbers: 43.66.Gf, 43.66.Hg, 43.66.Nm [WG] Date Received: April 29, 2004 Date Accepted: Date Accepted: October 21, 2004

Pitch perception and harmonic resolvability in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners

Listeners with sensorineural hearing loss are often impaired in their ability to perceive the pitch associated with the fundamental frequency (FO) of complex harmonic sounds. Four studies investigated the relationship between FO discrimination performance and the ability to resolve individual harmonic frequencies of a complex, testing the hypotheses (1) that the accurate FO discrimination perfo...

Comparison of frequency discrimination thresholds for complex and single tones in chinchillas.

Frequency discrimination thresholds were measured from five chinchillas for harmonic tone complexes having a fundamental frequency of 250 Hz. Stimuli consisted of the fundamental frequency and the second through 10th harmonics with individual components added in either cosine phase or random phase. In general, thresholds were independent of overall level for sound levels between 47 and 77 dB SP...

Listening experience with iterated rippled noise alters the perception of 'pitch' strength of complex sounds in the chinchilla.

Behavioral responses obtained from chinchillas trained to discriminate a cosine-phase harmonic tone complex from wideband noise indicate that the perception of 'pitch' strength in chinchillas is largely influenced by periodicity information in the stimulus envelope. The perception of 'pitch' strength was examined in chinchillas in a stimulus generalization paradigm after animals had been retrai...

Perception of the periodicity strength of complex sounds by the chinchilla.

The perception of periodicity strength was studied in chinchillas using a stimulus generalization paradigm in an operant-conditioning, positive reinforcement behavioral task. Stimuli consisted of cosine-phase and random-phase harmonic complex tones, infinitely iterated rippled noises, and wideband noise. These stimuli vary in periodicity strength as measured by autocorrelation functions and are...

The role of resolved and unresolved harmonics in pitch perception and frequency modulation discrimination.

A series of experiments investigated the influence of harmonic resolvability on the pitch of, and the discriminability of differences in fundamental frequency (F0) between, frequency-modulated (FM) harmonic complexes. Both F0 (62.5 to 250 Hz) and spectral region (LOW: 125-625 Hz, MID: 1375-1875 Hz, and HIGH: 3900-5400 Hz) were varied orthogonally. The harmonics that comprised each complex could...
